THE EFFECTS OF SOME DRUGS ON THE ACID PRODUCTION OF THE DENTAL PLAQUE IN VITRO

Abstract
This experiment was performed to study the effects of some antibiotics, fluorides, Ginseng extracts and fraction and antiseptics on the acid production of the dental plaque of early stage.
In vitro plaque, which had similar microbial and glycolytic characteristics to those of the plaque, in vivo, was formed on Brain-Heart Infusion agar-coated slides from 4times concentrated salivary sediment suspension by rotating them through the salivary sediment suspension at the velocity of 1 revolution/2min for 1 hour.
To determine the effects of the drugs, 0.5§¢ of drug solutions were added to 4.5§¢ of salivary sediment suspension to produce the desired concertration while 0.5§¢ sterile distilled water was added for control group.
And then plaque slides were placed in 3§¢ of 1% glucose solution and their acid production were measured by means of pH after 0, 6, 9, 12 hours of incubation period at 37¡É.
The drugs employed for this study were kanamycin, streptomycin, gentamicin, cephaloridine, NaF, SnF_(2), Ginseng water and methanol extracts, crude saponin fraction, benzalkalonium chloride and povidone-iodine. The results were as follows:
1) Above the level of 10§¶/§¢, kanamycin, streptomycin, gentamicin, cephaloridine exerted similar inhibitory effect significantly and at 1§¶/§¢ level, cephaloridine was more effective but its duration was shorter than others.
2) Fluorides inhibited acid production, but at each concentration, SnF_(2) was more effective than NaF.
3) Ginseng water extract inbibited acid production slightly at 1% level and methanol extract did not exert inhibitony effect. But crude saponin fraction enhanced the acid production at 0.5% and above.
4) Benzalkalonium and povidone-jodane inhbited the acid production markedly at the level of 0.1%.
